Canola

There are two types of canola grown in PEI, Brassica napus and Brassica campestris. Canola seeds are used to produce edible oil suitable for consumption by humans and livestock. The oil is also suitable for use as biodiesel.

History

Hybrid canola seed production is an expanding industry in the Maritime Provinces. The Maritimes offer several advantages for hybrid canola seed production. Yield potential is high; isolation requirements are easily met; and effective insect pollinators are abundant. At present, because there are no crushing facilities in the Maritimes for oil extraction, canola is only grown in this region under contract to companies in Quebec and Japan.

Preparation/Consumption

Canola oil is low in saturated fat (less than 7%), is high in monounsaturated fat, and has a beneficial omega-3 fatty acid profile. The minimum crude protein guarantee for Canadian canola meal is 36% (8.5% moisture basis). The actual protein content is usually 36-39%, depending on growing and harvest conditions.
