We love our shellfish, and our shellfish loves the cold!

Anyone who enjoys sampling Prince Edward Island’s multitude of culinary offerings is well aware that we have easy access to the best seafood in the world. But what many people don’t realize is that our shellfish is still harvested during the winter months through the ice so that we may all have access to fresh seafood year-round.

Not only is shellfish delicious, readily available, and relatively inexpensive here in PEI, but it’s a very healthy food choice.

For instance...

Oysters contain more iron than beef (twice as much, in fact).
A single oyster provides us with our entire daily recommended amount of zinc
Oysters contain vitamins C and B12, as well as minerals thiamin, magnesium, and phosphorous.
Mussels also contain an abundance of Vitamin C, zinc, and iron.
Mussels boast the same protein content as beef (per count), but they contain only a quarter of the calories as beef with only 2 grams of fat per serving. (We still love our beef, but mussels are an excellent choice of protein, too! Especially for anyone limiting their intake of red meat.)
Mussels are also high in omega-3 fatty acids.
